As the old song and saying go, breaking up is hard to do. If you have recently experienced a breakup, you may be wondering how long it will take for your ex-partner to regret it or whether he will at all.

While there are estimates on how long it takes for a guy to regret a breakup, the amount of pain and regret he experiences will vary greatly depending on the importance of the relationship to him.

Typically, getting over a breakup will require anywhere between a month and six months, although it may take him longer to feel regret. This depends on numerous factors related to the relationship itself. Oftentimes, a guy will regret a breakup between one month and six weeks as it is still fresh and new in his mind.

It is important to consider the duration of the relationship as well as the seriousness to better understand how an ex-partner may react to a breakup.

How long does it take for a guy to regret a breakup?

A Guy To Regret a Breakup

While it is difficult to pinpoint a specific timeframe, guys typically feel regret within the first month to six weeks after separation. Men may experience separation anxiety from their partners, especially if they have been in a committed relationship for years or even decades. Additionally, it may take your ex-partner a bit of time to readjust on their own before they truly feel the pang of regret and remorse.

Is it common to feel regret after a breakup?

It is not uncommon to feel regret and remorse after experiencing a breakup, even if you are the one who initiated it. Separating from a partner you once loved, or one that you still love but are no longer compatible with, is never easy.

Feeling remorse or regret over breaking up is most likely to occur in the first days and weeks after separating from your partner. If you share a living space, it will likely be even more difficult to cope with your new independent way of life.

Feeling regret is extremely common among both men and women, which is why it is highly likely that both you and your ex-partner will experience feelings of regret and remorse at some point following your breakup.

Do all guys feel regret after a breakup?

All Guys Feel Regret After a Breakup

While most men and women experience some semblance of regret after splitting from their partner, it is possible that some will not feel any regret whatsoever. This can be due to a variety of reasons and relationship problems.

If you notice that your partner is being cold, callous, and even downright rude to you after a breakup, this does not necessarily mean that he is not feeling any regret. In some cases, men will use negative behaviors in order to keep emotions and true feelings at bay, especially when going through a challenging time such as a serious separation or breakup.

If you believe that your ex-partner does not have any regrets regarding your breakup, there may be legitimate reasons behind his feelings and response to the separation. When an individual doesn’t feel sadness, anger, regret, or remorse about the end of a relationship, then they may have realized the situation was no longer suiting them long before things ended. Some reasons why a guy may not regret breaking up or separating from a partner in a long-term relationship include:

  • The relationship he is leaving was tumultuous or unhealthy.
  • The relationship was too challenging, difficult, or frustrating.
  • He is no longer interested in pursuing a romantic relationship with his current partner.
  • The relationship no longer serves his needs or the vision he has for his future.
  • He realizes he is not compatible with his ex-partner.
  • He is unable to commit to his partner or to anyone at the moment.

How can you tell if a guy regrets a breakup?

Being able to tell if your ex-partner regrets breaking up can be challenging, especially if you have limited or cut off all forms of contact. If you still have some form of contact with your ex-partner, you may be able to pick up on signs that he regrets the decision, such as:

  • He continues to text, call, or attempt to contact you in some way or another.
  • He verbally expresses regret and guilt about breaking up or spending time apart from you.
  • You notice that he is attempting to make real changes for the better and wants to communicate that to you.
  • He openly shares his thoughts and feelings regarding his regrets about his breakup publicly and through social media.
  • He is not afraid to tell you how he feels, even when it comes to expressing regret over your breakup.

While these signs may provide you with a false sense of hope when it comes to repairing your relationship, it is important to remember that your ex-partner may simply be lonely or coping with his new way of life. Avoid giving him excessive attention if you are unsure of where you stand with your ex, whether you are willing to work on your relationship or are ready to call it quits for good.

Do guys ever try to fix a breakup?

Fix a Breakup

Although most guys will feel and experience regret after a breakup, it is not common for men to attempt to fix a relationship after it has ended. However, if you have maintained ongoing contact with your ex-partner and you have a mutual understanding of your relationship’s wants and needs, it is not out of the realm of possibility that your guy may attempt to get back with you.

Is breaking up a way to fix a relationship?

No. Breaking up with the sole purpose of attempting to fix or repair a broken relationship rarely works, and oftentimes makes things even worse. While it may seem as though time apart from your partner will help him come to his senses, he may move on because he feels like you’ve already given up on him.

When you are in a turbulent relationship, the best course of action is improved communication. Knowing how to effectively communicate openly and honestly with your partner is an integral part of any successful long-term relationship, romantic or not.

How do you know if a relationship is worth repairing?

Do you want to get back with your ex but are unsure of where he stands? Do you wonder if your ex regrets breaking up and whether he wants to fix the relationship? Sometimes, there are signs that indicate your ex-partner not only has regrets about breaking up but that he may also be interested in getting back together.

You both think about each other often

If you and your ex think about each other often, even when you are not together, it may be possible to repair your broken relationship. When you are both committed to one another, it is much easier to work through issues that may have previously held you back.

You are still in constant contact

If you are still in contact with each other and he is open to discussing the breakup, your relationship may be worth repairing. If there is a lack of bitterness and resentment and warm conversation instead, it is possible to work through the issues that interfered with your relationship.

Your ex mentions spending time together

An ex who mentions spending time with you is more than likely still interested in pursuing some form of relationship with you, romantic or not. If you have just recently broken up, he is likely interested in pursuing a sexual or romantic relationship.

If you are unsure of how he feels, it is important to draw and define boundaries to protect yourself mentally and emotionally before you begin spending time with any ex-partner.

You are both honest about your previous shortcomings and failures

If you and your ex-partner are both capable of being honest about the shortcomings and failures that interfered with your relationship, you may have a chance to repair your connection after a breakup. A couple that is capable of being open about each of their individual shortcomings and problematic behaviors is more likely to have the ability to work through them.

You both encourage and support one another

Encouragement and support are two pillars of any successful relationship, even platonic friendships. If your partner does not feel supported or encouraged in your relationship, they are not likely to maintain a strong connection with you over time. If you and your ex-partner are still able to encourage and support one another even after breaking up, you may be able to salvage your relationship.

You have an unbreakable connection

A tell-tale sign that a relationship is worth repairing is an unbreakable connection between the two people. If you have a connection with an ex-partner that is difficult to describe and cannot be compared to any other connections you have experienced in your life, you may have the opportunity to fix and repair your relationship.

You have discussed getting back together

If you have openly discussed getting back together or seeing each other romantically again, your relationship may be salvageable, even after a breakup. Openly discussing the possibility of getting back together with one another demonstrates a willingness and motivation to improve the situation and connection with your ex-partner.

When you begin discussing the possibility of getting back together after a breakup, it is important to set clear boundaries. Knowing how serious an ex-partner is about recommitting to a relationship is key to succeeding with any relationship rekindling attempt.

Knowing how long it takes for a guy to regret a breakup is rarely simple or straightforward. Without a complete and honest inventory of the strength of your previous relationship and the connection you had with one another, it is difficult to know whether your ex will regret breaking up. Once you have honestly assessed the relationship you had with your ex-partner, you can begin to better understand his words, actions, and whether or not he truly has regrets about going your separate ways.
