Different objects and events can be interpreted in different ways, and their meanings depend on the thing and on the cultural context.
For instance, both colors and butterflies are interpreted in a number of different ways, though some cultures may have a shared interpretation.
Depending on the color of the butterfly, however, how that butterfly is interpreted may change completely.
It can be difficult to narrow down the meaning of a colored butterfly, as many cultures have diametrically opposed views.
Blue can represent anything from imagination to sadness, to sensitivity, to wide-open spaces (such as the sea and sky).
Today, we will examine different ways a blue butterfly can be interpreted spiritually.

The color blue and spirituality
In Hinduism
Swami Chinmayananda once wrote, “That which cannot be measured by the physical eye appears as blue, such as the vast sky or seas.”
This is meant to represent the greater significance of the color blue, which in Hinduism, represents the infinite and immeasurability of our universe.
In Buddhism
Buddhism views blue as a color representing both purity and healing and is associated with air and ears.
It is also a significant color in meditation; when one meditates on the color blue, their red anger can be transformed into blue wisdom.
Tantric beings that are wrathful are often blue, specifically because of the association between blue and the transformative process.
In Catholicism
Catholics represent the Virgin Mary through the color blue; thus, on Mary’s Feast Day, those who celebrate it wear blue.
During Masses thrown for the dead, blue is meant to symbolize the mourning process.
In Judaism
Tekhelet is a kind of dye that can be blue, blue-violet, or turquoise, and was a prized commodity in ancient Mediterranean civilizations.
It was also mentioned a number of times in the Hebrew Bible (a total of 49 times).
It carries significance to the Jewish people and is particularly used in order to protect against an evil eye, a curse brought about by a glare.
In Islam
In Islam, the color blue carries significant spiritual significance, representing the very depths of the universe.
Specifically, turquoise blue is said to have mystical qualities, and people with blue eyes are considered by some Muslims to have a degree of divinity.
What do butterflies represent?
For as disliked as bugs often are, butterflies are treated completely different than a cockroach, thanks in large part to their grace and wings.
Butterflies can represent a number of things in different cultures.
For example, a butterfly may represent a loved one’s passing, or it may represent overcoming hardship (death, surviving death, getting out of an abusive situation, etc.).
Religions, such as Hinduism, interpret butterflies differently (though not always).
A caterpillar turning into a butterfly represents metamorphosis and thus lines up well with the concept of rebirth in Hinduism.
Meditation is also an important thing in Hinduism and helps you transform from a normal being to an enlightened being.
What do blue butterflies represent spiritually?
There are a number of ways a blue butterfly can be interpreted.
Blue butterflies may represent a change to or from something vast, while it may also mean that you’re changing to or from a state of sadness.
What does it mean when I dream about a butterfly?
As complicated as dreams can be at times, that doesn’t mean that we can’t come up with a way to interpret them. However, there is no one way to do so.
Being that butterflies go through a metamorphosis, a dream about one may indicate you are experiencing or have experienced a change in your life.
Butterflies represent metamorphosis. If you have a dream about a blue butterfly, this may mean something particular to that color.
What does it mean when I dream about a blue butterfly?
In particular, seeing blue in a dream may indicate that you are feeling particularly calm, cool, and stable; however, it may also indicate that you don’t feel this way, but desire being able to feel that way.
A blue butterfly appearing in your dream may be your mind telling you it’s time to work towards that goal.
Blue can represent a large expanse, as mentioned above. If you see a blue butterfly in your dream, this may be representative of feeling lost in that large expanse.
It may also suggest that you have a lot of potential for growth and expansion.
Blue, as it relates to depression, may also permeate through a blue butterfly appearing in your dreams.
A blue butterfly, especially if they are flying away from you, could represent a depressive phase in your life ending, and in turn, you entering a new phase in your development.
What kinds of butterflies are blue?
Giant Blue Morpho (Morpho didius)
The Giant Blue Morpho, or Morpho didius, is a butterfly you have probably seen quite a bit of.
The upper wings have a vivid mix of blue and white, a black fringe, and white spots scattered across the fringe.
The “giant” in the name is not just for show or metaphor either; these creatures are quite large for butterflies, sporting an impressive wingspan of eight inches, though the males have wider and brighter wings than the females.
They tend to be found in South American regions and are drawn to tropical forest settings, though they are being threatened by deforestation and fragmentation of their habitat.
If you see a Giant Blue Morpho, the first thing you should say is “lucky me!”
However, seeing one may suggest that you have a big change on the horizon or that you are undergoing one at the moment.
Due to its rarity and being endangered, this may suggest that you have something that is coming to an end; whether that is a positive or negative end will be up to interpretation.
Is the Giant Blue Morpho actually blue?
You may have seen the claim made that blue butterflies aren’t actually blue, and while that may sound silly, there is actually a nugget of truth to that.
The Giant Blue Morpho, when viewed under a microscope, is shown to have diamond-shaped scales, which reflect light.
This reflection creates the visual illusion of blue, also known as iridescence.
Blue Pansy (Junonia orithya)
Blue Pansies, or Junonia orithya, are strikingly beautiful and are found in Africa, India, South-East Asia, and Australia.
There are multiple kinds of Blue Pansies, including the Dark Blue Pansy and the Pale Blue Pansy.
On the fringes of the Blue Pansy’s wings are patterns that resemble orange eyes, adapted by the butterfly to mimic the eyes of predators.
If you see a Blue Pansy, it may suggest that there are a lot of eyes on you, and especially a change going on with your life.
The change may also be a rather large one, even overwhelming, but you are nevertheless managing to approach it with a calm, collected attitude.
Being that there are multiple variants of the Blue Pansy, the color of the blue on their wings may affect how that change is interpreted.
Blue Moon Butterfly (Hypolimnas bolina)
The Blue Moon Butterfly, or Hypolimnas bolina, can be found across Asia, Australia, and Madagascar, and the upper wings are primarily black.
However, the wings have beautiful blue spots on them, which really stand out against the black.
Females have a similar pattern, though the wings are brownish-black instead.
If you see a Blue Moon Butterfly, you might be feeling like you’re lost in a vast expanse, so to speak.
Yet, the blue pattern may also be indicative of your desire to stand out, to be noticed for your qualities.
